Minecraft 1.20.1
Cockatiel
Feeding builds trust, and its crest changes with its state.
- Active hours
- Daytime / returns to roost at dusk
- Habitat
- Savanna / arid scrubland

Approaching and feeding
Approach while holding an accepted seed, fruit or vegetable, then right-click to feed it. Each portion eaten builds trust. Wait for it to finish eating before offering more; it becomes a companion once the trust requirement is met. Cocoa beans only arouse curiosity and will not be eaten.
Companion commands
Once tamed, the owner can sneak and right-click with an empty hand to cycle through Free, Follow, Stay and Return to Nest. The current mode appears on screen. Servers can disable this feature. A bird may still prioritize escaping danger.
Watch the crest
Its crest changes with its mood and behavior. Calm, curious and startled birds hold it differently. Approach to observe it; attacks interrupt its current behavior.
New calls after taming
Tamed cockatiels gain three new calls for ambient sounds and feeding interactions. Each time they vocalize, there is a 50% chance of using the original calls and a 50% chance of choosing one of the three new calls with equal probability. Wild cockatiels, hurt sounds and death sounds are unchanged.
Music and rest
It may sway when music plays nearby. At dusk, it seeks higher resting spots with its own kind. Attacks or loud noises wake sleeping birds.
Food list
Wheat seeds, melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, beetroot seeds, torchflower seeds, pitcher pods, melon slices, sweet berries, glow berries and apples.
These are the food tags in the current local build. Items contaminated with bird droppings are not treated as normal food for feeding.
